Christian Schunk

Associate Vice President, Awards & Compliance

Christian Schunk is a contracts and compliance specialist with more than 10 years of international development experience in grant making, government contracting, senior-level project management, field-based program support in Latin American and Africa, and technical assistance in grants and organizational management.

As the Associate Vice President of Awards and Compliance, Schunk is responsible for enhancing the quality of contract and subcontract management by providing high-level support, guidance, expert interpretation, and training in key areas of contract management — including subcontract administration, grants under contracts, procurement, and allowances. He also oversees the internal review function of the organization and takes a lead role in audit issues.

Before joining CNFA, Schunk worked at FHI 360 as a Contract Specialist and at Chemonics as a Grants Manager. In these roles, he provided leadership support for interpreting regulatory requirements and laws, conducted short-term field assignments and trainings on best practices for sub-award management, and oversaw of a variety of assistance and acquisition award mechanisms. He has extensive experience managing multi-donor portfolios, including USAID, the Gates Foundation, the Drosos Foundation, and the World Bank Group.

Prior to these positions, Schunk served in long-term field assignments with Habitat for Humanity International in Costa Rica and Catholic Relief Services in Madagascar. He also managed an emergency food security program in Chad for South Sudanese refugees and internally displaced persons. Before working in international development, Schunk spent two years as a senior legislative aide to the County Council in Montgomery County, Maryland.

A native Spanish speaker and fluent in French, Schunk holds a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the American University School of International Service.
